On that same benchmark page, Knotch audience journey tracking says visitors referred directly from LLMs convert at twice the rate and in one-third the number of sessions compared to other traffic sources.
Then came the April referral-share shift. On April 3, 2026, MediaPost reported Statcounter data showing ChatGPT still led AI chatbot referrals with 78.16%, but Gemini rose to 8.65% and passed Perplexity at 7.07%. Claude also jumped from 1.37% in February to 2.91% in March. The mix is changing fast, but the more important point is this: the platforms sending traffic are starting to look like serious decision surfaces, not novelty side channels.
That is why I would stop calling this a traffic story.

1. AI referral traffic is now measurable at enterprise scale
A year ago, a lot of AI traffic conversations still sounded hypothetical.
That gets harder to say when a benchmark is looking at 35.7 million LLM and chatbot sessions across 1,215 domains. AI referral traffic is still smaller than organic search. Nobody serious should pretend otherwise. But it is now large enough to measure, segment, and compare by landing page, source, and conversion outcome.

In plain English, the AI system is doing part of the qualification work before the website visit starts.

Classic search often sends users into a research path. They open tabs, skim category pages, bounce, come back later, and only gradually move toward a decision.

1. Treat commercial pages as GEO pages
This is the big one.
A lot of GEO programs still put most of their attention on informational blog content. That work matters. It helps brands get cited, discovered, and understood.
But if AI-referred visitors are arriving later in the journey, the real bottleneck often sits on commercial pages.
That means your pricing pages, comparison pages, category pages, case studies, and buyer FAQs need to be citation-friendly and conversion-ready at the same time.
2. Break out AI traffic reporting by source and landing page
Do not lump all AI traffic into one dashboard row.
Break it out by:
- •source surface
- •landing page type
- •conversion event
- •sales stage influence
- •assisted revenue or pipeline where available
You want to know whether Gemini traffic to a pricing page behaves differently from ChatGPT traffic to a comparison page. That is where the strategy starts getting concrete.
3. Design pages for validation, not only discovery
AI-referred visitors often arrive with a narrower question than classic search visitors.
They need proof quickly.
That means:

- •named customer outcomes
- •buyer-facing objections handled on-page
