Why GPT-5.5 Cites Brand Sites Less

If you run a B2B SaaS brand and you watch your ChatGPT citation rate weekly, you probably noticed something around the last week of April. Your own domain stopped showing up as often. Comparison sites, journalism, Reddit threads, and G2 listings started showing up more.

That is not a measurement glitch. The citation pipeline changed when GPT-5.5 became the default Thinking model on April 23, 2026. Within four days, Writesonic ran a controlled comparison of 50 prompts across the three current ChatGPT models from the same Plus account on the same day. The result is the cleanest single data point on the shift: GPT-5.4 cited brand-owned websites in 56.8% of its responses. GPT-5.5 cited them in 47.2%. That is a ten-point drop in a four-day window.

The drop is not because GPT-5.5 dislikes your brand. It is because GPT-5.5 dropped one specific query pattern that used to force results onto brand domains. Once you understand that single mechanic, the fix is straightforward. So is the failure mode if you do nothing.

What actually changed between GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.5

The headline number is the brand-citation drop. The mechanism behind it is more useful.

GPT-5.4 ran broader, more aggressive scoping queries to construct each response. When it searched the open web, it frequently issued queries with Google's site: operator, forcing results onto a specific domain. That operator pushed brand-owned content into the candidate pool more often than it would have appeared otherwise. GPT-5.5 issues fewer queries per prompt and rarely uses site: at all. The candidate pool then defaults to whatever a natural search returns: review sites, journalism, comparison content, and forum threads.

GPT-5.5 is doing less searching and citing fewer things per answer. When it does search, it uses the open web more naturally. Brand sites lose share to whatever the open search engine surfaces.

GPT-5.4 forced its way to brand domains. GPT-5.5 lets the search engine decide. The candidate pool moved off your site by default.

The 30% fan-out drop matters separately from the site: drop. Fewer queries per prompt means a smaller total candidate pool. Even brands that survive the search-engine-decides shift have less surface area to be cited on. Why GPT-5.5 stopped citing your brand site

There are four mechanisms behind the drop. Each one is independently fixable. Together they explain the full ten-point gap.

Reason #1: The site: operator dropped from 40.5% to 12.6% of queries

This is the single biggest driver. The Writesonic study measured a 3.2x reduction in site: operator usage. In practical terms: GPT-5.4 would search "comparison crm tools site:hubspot.com" or "[brand-name] integration limits site:[brand-domain]" routinely. GPT-5.5 mostly does not. It searches "comparison crm tools" or "[brand-name] integration limits" and trusts the search engine ranking.

If your brand domain was getting cited because GPT-5.4 was force-fetching from it, the citation is gone under GPT-5.5. The page may still rank for the query in Google, but Google's organic top-three rarely includes your own domain on a "vs competitor" or "comparison" query.

Reason #2: GPT-5.5 issues 30% fewer queries per prompt

Fewer queries means a smaller candidate pool per answer. GPT-5.4 averaged 10.5 fan-out queries per user prompt; GPT-5.5 averages 7.3. The model is more decisive and less exploratory. Brands at the citation-pool margin previously got into responses by appearing in one or two of the longer-tail sub-queries. With fewer sub-queries, those long-tail entries disappear from the answer.

This is consistent with the broader fan-out behavior we have tracked since the original GPT-5 family. The trend is fewer, sharper queries, not more and broader ones.

Reason #3: Domain concentration deepened: ~30 domains capture 67% of citations

The Writesonic data shows that within any single topic, roughly thirty domains capture two-thirds of citations under GPT-5.5. Unique domains per response dropped from 19 under GPT-5.4 to 15 under GPT-5.5. The shape of the citation pool is now a steeper power law than it was sixty days ago.

If your brand is not already in the top thirty domains for your topic cluster, GPT-5.5 is unlikely to find you. Reason #4: Reliability-first design favors verified third-party sources

GPT-5.5 was positioned by OpenAI as a "reliability-first" release with hallucination reduction as the explicit goal. One downstream consequence of that design: when the model is unsure, it defaults to a source it can verify against multiple references. A brand's own domain looks like a single primary source. A G2 listing, a Search Engine Land article, or a Reddit thread looks like external verification.

The bias is not anti-brand. It is pro-verification. The effect on brand-site citation rate is the same either way.

Who wins and who loses under GPT-5.5

The Writesonic data breaks the citation shift down by vertical. Some categories gained brand visibility under GPT-5.5. Most lost it.

The split is not random. Fitness, travel, and ecommerce are categories where buyers expect direct answers from brand-owned pages (product pages, route maps, comparison content). Legal, services, marketing, and education are categories where buyers expect independent verification (third-party reviews, news coverage, regulator references).

GPT-5.5's reliability bias maps cleanly onto that buyer expectation. The verticals that lost the most are the verticals where buyers historically wanted a third-party check anyway. The model is enforcing what the buyer already wanted.

The fix is not to chase the site: operator back. It is to accept that your candidate pool is now the open web minus a brand-site shortcut, and to build presence inside that pool. Four steps.

Step 1: Re-baseline your citation tracking against GPT-5.5

If your dashboards are still showing GPT-5.4 era numbers, the ten-point brand-citation drop will look like a sudden Q2 collapse. It is not. The model changed. Step 2: Reallocate budget from brand-site work to third-party presence

If brand-site citations dropped ten points and third-party citations rose by roughly that amount, the optimization budget should shift in the same proportion. That means more investment in G2 review acceleration, comparison-content placement, Reddit answer threads in your category subreddits, and Search Engine Land or industry-publication contributor pieces.

Step 3: Concentrate topical authority on five to seven content clusters

If 30 domains capture 67% of citations within a topic, the only path to citation share is to be one of those 30 domains for a specific topic. The Writesonic vertical splits show winners and losers under GPT-5.5 in a way that aggregate citation tracking will hide. How GPT-5.5 fits the broader citation-pool compression story

The brand-site drop is one of three pool-compression events documented in the last sixty days. Read together, they tell a single story.

In late February, Resoneo and Meteoria measured the average ChatGPT response pulling from 19 unique domains. By April 27 under GPT-5.5, that number was 15. A roughly 20% reduction in candidate domains per response. The candidate pool is shrinking.

In early May, Otterly's URL Citation Study found that 15.8% of cited URLs account for 50% of total citations. The shape of the pool is winner-take-most at the URL level, not just the domain level.

Probably not. The site: operator reduction looks like a deliberate design decision, not a regression. OpenAI positioned GPT-5.5 as reliability-first, and the search-behavior change is consistent with that framing. Is the drop the same on ChatGPT free, Plus, and Enterprise?

No. The Writesonic study measured GPT-5.3 Instant (the free-tier default) at 13.4% brand-citation rate, compared to 47.2% for GPT-5.5 Thinking and 56.8% for GPT-5.4 Thinking. Free-tier ChatGPT cites brand domains far less than the Thinking models do regardless of which Thinking model is current.
