Their head of research, Tomek Rudzki, built the dataset by capturing the sub-queries each LLM issues in the background when a user types a prompt. The visible question is one input. The hidden fanouts are the actual content surface the model checks before it answers.
Five million fanouts is roughly a fifty-times larger sample than Profound's earlier April 30 fanout study, which already established that ChatGPT's fanout volume had doubled. Peec's larger run lets us see across engines, not just inside ChatGPT.
Three findings matter for B2B brands.
The fanout volume per visible query is wildly different by engine. Grok is the outlier at 6.8 sub-queries per prompt. ChatGPT sits at 2.1. Perplexity behaves closest to classical search at 1.4. The language model also reshapes the user's prompt into a research brief. A single question often produces five to eight fanouts that walk down a buyer decision path: broad category, then year-modified version, then comparison, then site-specific source check. Each of those fanouts is a separate retrieval event. Each is a separate chance for your brand to be present or absent.
Why 6.8 fanouts changes the B2B visibility math
The first instinct for most marketing teams is to dismiss Grok on user-share grounds. Grok is smaller than ChatGPT. The instinct is wrong because user share is the wrong metric for citation strategy.
Reason #1: Each visible Grok query is 6.8 content surface checks
