A serious audit should answer six questions.

- •Does the markup help on real prompts, not just in a validator?
If you skip any one of those, you can end up with markup that looks clean in a tool and still does not help the page become citable.
Step 1: Audit entity fit before you audit markup quantity
A lot of teams start by asking how much schema a page has.
Wrong starting point.
Start with what the page is actually trying to do.
A comparison page is not just a generic article. A service page is not just a homepage fragment. A pricing FAQ is not just a block of miscellaneous questions. If the structured layer does not clarify the underlying entity and page purpose, the model has to infer too much from surrounding copy.
That is where pages drift into fuzzy interpretation.
For each target URL, write down:

- •proof type the page uses
- •schema types currently present

The point is not to shove every schema type onto every page. The point is to make the markup match the retrieval job.
If your page wins because it answers a comparison question, the structured layer should reinforce comparison logic. If the page wins because it answers a service qualification question, the structured layer should reinforce that. A validator cannot tell you whether the page's schema fits the query class it is trying to win.
Step 2: Check visible-answer parity
This is the audit step most teams skip, and it causes a lot of silent damage.
Visible-answer parity means the important answer in your markup also appears clearly on the page in plain language.
If the schema says one thing and the visible copy says another, you create a trust problem.
If the schema contains a crisp answer but the page buries the real language under brand fluff, you create an extraction problem.
A quick way to test parity:
- •pull the FAQ, service, or article-related schema from the page
- •list the key questions and answers in a sheet
- •highlight where each one appears visibly on the page
- •mark anything missing, softened, or contradicted
You are looking for three failure modes.
Failure mode 1: the schema is cleaner than the page
This happens when a team writes a good answer for JSON-LD but leaves vague marketing copy on the visible page.
The markup says:
This service is best for B2B software companies with high-value buying journeys and weak AI recommendation visibility.
The page says:
We help innovative brands unlock modern AI discoverability.
That is not parity. That is a mismatch between the machine-readable answer and the human-visible answer.
Failure mode 2: the page says something stronger than the schema
Sometimes the visible page carries the proof and specificity, but the markup stays generic. In that case, the schema is not reinforcing the best answer on the page. It is just coasting alongside it.
Failure mode 3: the answer exists, but it is too far from the proof
This shows up a lot on service pages. The answer block says the right thing, but the evidence sits half a page later in a disconnected section. Answer engines do better when the claim and support live close together.

Step 3: Audit page-type schema, not just FAQ schema
FAQ schema gets most of the attention because it is familiar and because the citation lift can be meaningful. Fair enough.
But an AEO schema audit should review the whole page-type stack.
For commercial and educational pages, that usually means asking:

A practical example:
If your comparison page answers five buyer questions, cites methodology, and includes a decision table, but the only structured layer is generic article markup, you are missing the chance to reinforce those comparison answers in a machine-readable way.
Likewise, if your service page has a strong qualification section, but no FAQ or breadcrumb support, the page may still be readable. It just carries less orientation than it could.

Step 4: Audit proof support, not just answer formatting
This is where a lot of schema work becomes cosmetic.
A model does not only need a neat question-answer pair. It also needs to trust the answer enough to reuse it.
That is why your audit should log what proof sits nearest to the structured answer.
Useful proof patterns include:
- •named methodology
- •timeframe or last-updated context
- •customer evidence
- •benchmark numbers
- •source links
- •implementation details
- •limitations or fit qualifiers
If the answer says a service works best for a certain buyer profile, show the fit qualifier visibly. If the answer claims a process improves retrieval, connect that claim to a named workflow, example, or source.

When you review schema, keep asking one question: if the model extracted this answer alone, would the reader see why it should be trusted?
If the answer is no, the markup is not your main problem. The proof layer is.
Step 5: Check breadcrumb and internal-link context
Schema audits get narrow fast.
They turn into a checklist about JSON-LD blocks and forget that page meaning is reinforced by site structure too.
BreadcrumbList matters because it gives a model a cleaner read on where the page sits in the hierarchy. Internal linking matters because it tells both crawlers and retrievers which pages the site itself treats as central.
For every target page, inspect:
- •whether breadcrumb markup matches the visible breadcrumb path
- •whether the page links to the supporting proof page it references
- •whether nearby guides link into the page with clear anchor text
- •whether outdated pages still absorb most of the internal reinforcement
This is one reason schema and crawlability work should not live in separate silos. The markup may be fine, but if the page sits in weak structural context, retrieval can still drift toward another asset.
Step 6: Validate, then run retrieval QA
Do both. In that order.
Validation still matters. Broken markup helps nobody.
But this is where mature operators separate from checkbox optimizers: they do not stop at the validator.
After the markup passes, run a small prompt QA set against the page type you changed.
For example:
- •if you updated service-page schema, test service qualification and hiring prompts
- •if you updated comparison-page schema, test shortlist and versus prompts
- •if you updated educational FAQ markup, test explanatory prompts that should surface those answers
Then log:
- •whether the right page appears more consistently
