The CITE Index · Final Report · May 19 to July 21, 2026

We asked AI 90,132 questions about Indian brands. Here is everything it told us.

For 63 days, The CITE Index ran 500 unaided buyer prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode every night, across 10 of India's most-funded consumer categories. The result, 90,132 collected answers, shows an AI search landscape that is already settled: four categories never changed leaders once, the average daily leader appeared in 78.2% of its category's answers, and Reddit out-cited every news publisher in the country. This page is the complete, final record of the study.

Leadership

AI search is a settled market wearing a new market's clothes.

The most important number in this study is zero. In four of the ten categories, Flight & Hotel OTAs, B2B Payments, D2C Skincare, and Test Prep Edtech, the brand that led on day one still led on day 63, without a single day's interruption. Booking.com, Razorpay, Minimalist, and PhysicsWallah held rank 1 on 100% of their tracked days.

Across the whole index, the daily leader changed on just 18.7% of day pairs, and most of that churn came from two categories. The average leader was named in 78.2% of its category's answers on the days it led. When an answer engine decides a brand is the answer, it keeps deciding that, night after night.

In 4 of 10 categories, the AI leader never changed once in 63 days. AI visibility behaves like a moat, not a lottery.

Leader changes: days the rank-1 brand differed from the previous day. Days at #1: share of tracked days held by the modal leader. Leader presence: average share of the day's answers naming that day's leader.

The instability that does exist splits two ways, and the difference matters. Quick Commerce flipped leaders 30 times, but Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart each appeared in nearly every answer (the day's leader averaged 99.0% presence), so the flips are three co-dominant brands trading a photo finish. Electric Cars flipped 27 times with the leader averaging only 58.7% presence: that is a genuinely open market where AI has not made up its mind. Every other category has, and the window to change its mind is narrowing.

02

Sources

Reddit is the most cited source in Indian AI answers. It is not close.

Rolled up to the root domain, reddit.com drew 14,698 citations over the study, 58% more than the next source, and appeared in 13.6% of all 90,132 answers. The engines do not cite Reddit as one site; they cite individual subreddits as if each were a specialist publication: r/IndianSkincareAddicts in skincare answers, r/IndianStockMarket in investing answers, r/indianbikes and r/CarsIndia in vehicle answers.

The rest of the top table splits into three kinds of surface. Platforms (the Play Store, YouTube, Instagram) function as proof a product exists and people use it. News media (Times of India, Economic Times, Autocar India) supply facts and rankings. And brand-owned domains, razorpay.com, joinditto.in, groww.in, ithinklogistics.com, prove that engines will cite a brand's own site heavily, if the content answers the question being asked.

Citations rolled up to root domain (all subreddits count toward reddit.com). Brand-owned domains highlighted. A scraper artifact domain (api.dataforseo.com, 3,176 rows) is excluded.

That last group is the practical headline for marketers: four of the twelve most cited domains in the entire study are brand-owned. AI engines have no prejudice against citing you for your own category. They only require that your pages read like answers instead of advertisements.

03

Engines

The three engines agree on winners, but not on receipts.

89.6% of all answers carried at least one citation, but the engines differ sharply in how consistently they show their sources. Google AI Mode cited sources in 97.4% of its answers, ChatGPT (with web search) in 92.5%, and Gemini in only 79.1%. When they do cite, all three attach about five sources per answer.

ChatGPT

92.5%

Gemini

For brands this defines where citation work pays fastest: AI Mode and ChatGPT answers are auditable, so a citation earned there is a visible, clickable asset. Gemini names brands more often than it credits sources, which makes share of voice, not citations, the metric to watch there.

04

Implications

What 63 days of data says brands should actually do.

  1. 1.Treat AI visibility as a land grab, not a campaign.

Leaders compound. The engines re-selected the same winner day after day in 6 of 10 categories. If AI already recommends you, your position is more defensible than a search ranking. If it does not, every settled day makes displacement harder.

  2. 2.Run your category's Reddit strategy like a channel, not a risk.

The single most cited source in Indian consumer AI answers is community discussion. Engines quote specific subreddits by name. A brand that is absent, or disliked, in its category's subreddits is absent or disliked in the answers.

  3. 3.Publish answers on your own domain.

Razorpay, Ditto, Groww, and iThink Logistics earned thousands of citations from their own sites. Documentation, honest comparison pages, and calculators get cited. Brochureware does not.

  4. 4.Measure presence per prompt, not rank.

AI answers are not a ranked list of ten links. A brand is either inside the answer or invisible. The metric that predicted stability in this study was share of answers naming the brand, prompt by prompt, night after night.

Methodology and notes

50 unaided, buyer-language prompts per category, zero brand names in any prompt. Run nightly at 21:00 IST against ChatGPT (with web search), Gemini, and Google AI Mode via DataForSEO's scraper endpoints, India location. Brand mentions parsed with word-boundary matching; every cited URL extracted and archived. The full prompt sets, parsing rules, and per-answer receipts are public in the methodology and the archived editions.

Coverage: 621 daily editions across 63 calendar days (a few category-days were lost to provider outages; nothing was backfilled or interpolated). Citation counts roll subdomains and subreddit paths up to root domains. 3,176 source rows pointing at the scraper's own api.dataforseo.com domain were identified as a collection artifact and excluded from the source analysis above.

Questions about the study

Is The CITE Index still updating?
No. Daily collection ran from May 19 to July 21, 2026 and has concluded. All 621 daily editions, every per-prompt receipt, and the JSON export remain permanently online. This final report is the study's capstone.
What is the single biggest finding?
Stability. Four of ten categories never changed AI leaders across the whole study, and the average daily leader appeared in 78.2% of that category's answers. AI search visibility in India behaves like a moat, not a lottery: whoever the engines settle on stays settled.
What is the most cited source in Indian AI answers?
Reddit. Rolled up to the root domain, reddit.com drew 14,698 citations across the study, more than any other source, and appeared in 13.6% of all 90,132 answers. Engines cite it at subreddit level: r/IndianSkincareAddicts for skincare, r/IndianStockMarket for investing, and so on.
Can I reuse this data?
